slow motion

interactive installation
tobacco warehouse / 9-17 november 2007

A person's voice is always physically related to his/her body, and the position of that body in a space. The installation Slow Motion transforms the body itself into a voice, that interferes with it's surroundings. The position(s) and slow movements of people inside the installation change the 'voice' of the space. In the space 2 sets of instruments are set up. Each set consists of a stringed instrument on a stand, and a guitar amplifier/speaker at some distance. The strings of each instrument are prepared, by weaving wooden or metal sticks through them. When the volume of the amps is turned up high enough, a low feedbacksound will be generated by each instrument. The normal procedure would be that the sounds escalate, but the sticks through the strings prevent this. Other strings start resonating as well, forming cycles that build up slowly, increase and decrease. In the same time the frequencies of both instruments interfere with each other, changing each other's cycles. The compex construction of standing waves in the space will change when people in the space take positions, move slowly, taking new positions, etc. They again interfere with the aural happenings in the space, causing new changes in the cycles, pitch, volume, etc. So they literally change the voice of the space, just by being there.
